Welcome Message from the General Chairs

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to Embedded Systems Week – ESWEEK 2008 – in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. ESWEEK is an exciting event which brings together conferences, tutorials and workshops centered on various aspects of embedded systems research and development, spanning the spectrum from software to hardware as well as issues in, and tools for modeling, specification, verification and validation of complex embedded systems. Three leading conferences in the area – CASES, CODES+ISSS, and EMSOFT – will take place at the same time and location, allowing attendees to benefit from a wide range of cutting-edge research topics covered by these conferences. The combined program of the three conferences will offer four plenary keynotes, two special sessions, two panels and over 100 technical paper presentations. ESWEEK will also offer four half-day tutorials that survey hot topics of general interest to the embedded systems community. Additionally, the event will host six workshops that will give attendees the opportunity to interact with colleagues in a more intimate setting, allowing for presentation of new ideas and work-in-progress.

ESWEEK is the premier technical event on embedded systems: 2008 marks the 4th in a series of successful meetings that have continued to grow in interest, scope, and momentum. The first meeting of ESWEEK was held in 2005 in the New York Metropolitan area, collocating two established conferences: CODES+ISSS (covering topics in embedded system codesign and synthesis) and EMSOFT (covering topics in embedded systems software). In Seoul, Korea ESWEEK 2006 welcomed the CASES conference, broadening the ESWEEK research portfolio to include topics on compilers and architectures for embedded systems. The 3rd incarnation of ESWEEK was held in 2007 in Salzburg, Austria, with a dynamic program that featured a mix of parallel technical tracks, plenary invited talks and panels, and associated tutorials and workshops. This year we are pleased to present a conference that builds on the successes of previous years: with one conference registration to ESWEEK, attendees can freely participate in any of the three primary conferences (CASES, CODES+ISSS, and EMSOFT), and can also attend the pre-conference tutorials. Similarly, there is now one workshop registration at ESWEEK that allows attendees to participate in any of the six co-located workshops.

Each day of the main ESWEEK technical program opens with a plenary invited talk hosted by each of the primary conferences. This year ESWEEK and EMSOFT are honored to host the 2007 ACM Turing Award Lecture delivered by the winners – Edmund M. Clarke, Allen E. Emerson, and Joseph Sifakis – during the opening session of ESWEEK. The technical program committees of each conference, together with the tutorials, workshops and panels chairs, have put together an exciting program that will stimulate and inform attendees, while providing a forum for discussions, collaborations, and networking.

A complex event such as ESWEEK is a team effort that requires a dedicated group of volunteers to manage the success of the conference’s growth in scale and offerings. We wish to thank every member of the organizing committee for their dedicated efforts in making the event a success. In particular, special thanks go to the following people for managing critical aspects of the conference organization: Tony Givargis for finances, Wayne Wolf for local arrangements, Frank Vahid for publications, Nate Clark for the conference websites, Philipp Lucas for electronic media, Adam Donlin for industrial contributions, Miguel Miranda and James Hamblen for workshops, Wolfgang Rosenstiel for panels, Luca Carloni for tutorials, and Rolf Ernst for awards. We also thank the Steering Committee members, the Program Chairs, and the Technical Program Committee members of each conference and workshop for selecting papers of the highest quality. ESWEEK continues to engage the active participation and involvement of industry. This is highlighted by our premier contributor – the EU ArtistDesign Network of Excellence on Embedded Systems Design – as well as our industrial contributors Altera, Cypress, Elsevier, IBM Research, NXP, Springer, Synopsys, and Xilinx; we thank them for their generous donations. Finally, we thank our sponsoring societies: ACM (SIGBED, SIGDA, SIGMICRO) and IEEE (CAS, Computer, CEDA); and in-cooperation with IFIP.

This year ESWEEK 2008 will experience “southern hospitality” in the city of Atlanta, GA, USA, hosted by our Local Arrangements Chair, Wayne Wolf. Atlanta is the state capital of Georgia, and one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the USA. It hosted the 1996 summer Olympics and is home to several media networks, including CNN. Several international companies are also headquartered in Atlanta, as are major universities (e.g., Georgia Tech and Emory) and scientific institutions (e.g., Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Atlanta offers a number of tourist attractions, including the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coca-Cola (our banquet venue where attendees can view a bottling line and also sample Coca-Cola variants from across the world). We hope you enjoy the conference and arrangements and we look forward to your active participation in ESWEEK 2008, and your continued support for the ESWEEK series!
